Empowering Veterans with Housing Stability

On June 10, 2019, the LACDA celebrated the groundbreaking of El Nuevo Amanecer Apartments. Located in the unincorporated area of East Los Angeles, El Nuevo Amanecer Apartments will provide 61 units of affordable housing, including two units set aside for management. The development will serve 31 formerly homeless veterans, as well as 28 households with limited means.

New Directions for Veterans, a non-profit dedicated to empowering military individuals and their families, will be the lead service provider for the 31 veteran units, and the East LA Community Corporation, a non-profit striving to cultivate community development, equitable housing, and wealth through financial empowerment, will be the service provider for the 28 households with limited means. In addition to the comprehensive supportive services provided, both on and offsite, residents will also be able to utilize El Nuevo Amanecer’s two community rooms; computer workstations; bicycle racks; courtyard; exercise room, children’s play area; and container garden and edible landscape program. The housing development will also include electric vehicle parking, ENERGY STAR rated appliances, incorporate quality insulation installation, and pursue LEED Silver certification.

The LACDA provided $2,500,000 in HOME funds and $5,340,000 in County General Funds for predevelopment, construction, and permanent financing. The project also received five Project-Based Vouchers to serve veterans that cannot qualify for Veteran Affairs benefits and 26 Project-Based Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Vouchers.
